Don’t Miss Your Flight—Make Sure You’re REAL ID Ready!
If you're planning to fly within the U.S.—whether it’s to catch that cruise from Seattle or jet off to an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean—there’s one very important thing you’ll need: a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card.
What Is the REAL ID?
The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 to set stricter security standards for state-issued IDs. Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities.
How Do You Know If You Have One?
Check your driver’s license—REAL ID-compliant cards usually have a star (gold, black, or white) in the upper corner. If you don’t see a star, you’ll need to update your ID through your state’s DMV.
What If I Don’t Have It in Time?
No problem—as long as you have an alternative form of acceptable ID, such as a valid passport, military ID, or DHS trusted traveler card (like Global Entry), you’re good to go. But for convenience, getting your REAL ID is highly recommended for frequent flyers.
What You’ll Need to Get a REAL ID:
-
Proof of identity (like a birth certificate or passport)
-
Proof of Social Security number
-
Two documents showing your current address
Each state may vary slightly, so check your local DMV for exact requirements.
