What Is the REAL ID? The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 to set stricter security standards for state-issued IDs. Starting May 7, 2025 , you’ll need a REAL ID to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities. How Do You Know If You Have One? Check your driver’s license—REAL ID-compliant cards usually have a star (gold, black, or white) in the upper corner. If you don’t see a star, you’ll need to update your ID through your state’s DMV.
